PROJECT CARGO AT PORT OF DUQM: WHEN PORT CAPABILITY BECOMES PART OF THE LOGISTICS PLAN

Moving oversized and heavy cargo is not simply a matter of selecting a suitable truck or vessel.

The port itself can be a critical part of the logistics engineering.

Port of Duqm operates as a multipurpose port handling general, project, breakbulk, containerized, and other cargo. Its multipurpose terminal includes two 125-tonne mobile harbour cranes, capable of a combined 250-tonne lift in dual-hoist operation, as well as a 20-hectare open yard for general and project cargo.

The port has also handled exceptional heavy-lift operations. In one documented project, a single piece weighing almost 800 MT, measuring approximately 73 m × 12.6 m × 13 m, was discharged for the Duqm Refinery project. For project cargo, the planning chain can therefore involve:

Cargo assessment → Port capability → Heavy-lift equipment → Transport engineering → Route planning → Handling → Final delivery

The key lesson is simple:

The right logistics solution starts with understanding the cargo, the infrastructure, and the complete route—not just the transportation leg.
